David Miliband’s speech to the Open Left project at Demos

‘Labour succeeds when it is the radical reformer of the excesses of both the market and the state. At our best, we use both to empower people and constrain each where they overpower. That is the basis for a social market economy.’ David Miliband’s speeck to the Open Left project at Demos, 27 May 2010

The Future of Labour and the British Centre-Left’

On Thursday 27 May the Demos Open Left Project and Soundings Magazine hosted a seminar of prominent centre-left figures to discuss the kind of politics, values, political economy and policy strategies that will make Labour and the wider centre-Left the great reforming force in British politics of the coming decade.

The responding addresses were made by John Cruddas MP and David Miliband MP.

How Labour Wins Again

On Thursday 20 May 2010 and in the aftermath of the general election defeat, the former Chief Secretary to the Treasury and MP for Birmingham Hodge Hill, Liam Byrne , gave a keynote speech to the Demos Open Left Project on ‘How Labour Wins Again.’

He argued that Labour faces a ‘full on fight’ for the centre ground of British Politics, must renew its commitment to the ‘politics of aspiration’ and must ‘once again place community politics at the centre of our world.’

He also affirmed a vision of Britain as a country of powerful people in charge of their change. Click here for the full speech.
